ZINC PREVENTS CHILDHOOD LRI
Children in developing countries who are zinc-deficient are at risk of developing lower respiratory infection, according to this month's issue of Pediatrics. The double blind, randomized, controlled study of 609 Indian children aged 6 to 35 months investigated the benefits of daily zinc supplementation. The children -- all residents if low-income urban areas -- were split into two groups. An experimental group of 298 subjects was given multivitamins plus 10 mg of elemental zinc daily for 120 days. A control group of 311 participants was given multivitamins, without zinc. The children taking zinc were 45% less likely to contract lower respiratory infection than children in the control group. Lower respiratory infections account for one third of all childhood deaths in developing countries.
